# 04 — Museum Interpretation

## 1. Purpose

This document defines the fourth research domain for The Curiosity Lab: **museum interpretation**.

Its purpose is to examine how museums, heritage sites and interpretive environments help people move from encountering an object, place or artefact toward meaning, curiosity and understanding.

This domain is important because The Curiosity Lab frequently begins from concrete encounters:

The purpose of this paper is not to turn The Curiosity Lab into a museum guide.

The purpose is to learn from museum interpretation so that curiosity-oriented information architecture can support:

- object-led curiosity;
- contextual meaning;
- visitor agency;
- interpretive framing;
- visible uncertainty;
- movement from object to wider systems.

## 2. Current Status

This is a Version 0.1 working draft.

It is suitable for:

- generating candidate information architecture principles;
- identifying provisional ontology entities and relationships;
- informing MVP experiments;
- preparing for `07-Patterns-Across-Disciplines.md`.

It is not yet suitable for:

- final claims about museum learning;
- claims about digital museum effectiveness;
- validated object-led design conclusions;
- external publication.

Current confidence: **Moderate**

Reason:

- Museum interpretation and object-based learning provide a strong adjacent evidence base.
- Several high-relevance sources are now registered or queued.
- Digital translation remains uncertain.
- The distinction between physical encounter and digital representation needs further work.
- MVP validation has not yet begun.

An object is a concrete thing that can be encountered, observed and interpreted.

It is different from simply providing information.

Information communicates facts.

This matters because The Curiosity Lab is explicitly interested in meaningful connection.

Falk and Dierking’s contextual model is central because it argues that museum experience emerges from interaction between personal, social and physical contexts.

This refinement matters because it avoids a purely abstract graph model.

It says that connected knowledge may need an entry point.

The object provides the encounter.

Interpretation provides the bridge.

The graph provides the wider field.

For the information architecture, this implies that objects should not be represented as isolated content items.
